Why become a GA Branch?
A GA Branch is a local network of teachers which works to support teachers in sharing good practice, bring in leading edge practitioners and inspire young people to see geography as an important part of their education.
There are many reasons for becoming a GA Branch. Being affiliated to the GA as a trusted voice for geography teachers, gives a sense of quality, legitimacy and continuity to your network. You will be able to use the ‘affiliated to the GA logo’ on event publicity which will help to attract others to the Branch. This face-to-face networking is invaluable and provides professional development, support and opportunities for teachers.
Being a GA Branch will enable support from HQ staff who are able to provide ideas, resources and further networking opportunities as well as recommend speakers. Providing that you have given us an up-to-date programme, HQ will advertise your activities and celebrate your achievements nationally using a range of media including the GA Magazine, Facebook and Twitter. We also have a dedicated Branch officer who is able to liaise with and offer advice to new and current Branch Chairs and Secretaries.
- There is also a financial contribution which can be payed to each Branch on submission of an annual claim form. This subvention is £12 plus £3 for each member of the Branch who is also a qualifying member of the GA. When a new branch is launched, the GA may, upon request, contribute financially to support a launch event e.g. funds to cover refreshments, a speaker and/or marketing of the event.
How do I set up a GA Branch?
Setting up a branch is easy! You’ll need at least four teachers to be or become GA members (a school membership can cover more than one teacher) and you will need to decide how to organise the Branch i.e. who will chair meetings and keep a record of any expenditure. You can have any number of people involved in running the Branch but we do ask that GA members are actually involved in this! When you’re ready to get going contact us for an affiliation form and we’ll do the rest…

You can read more about setting up a branch in this GA Magazine article (PDF).
