Each year the GA’s International Special Interest Group (ISIG) organises an overseas GA Study Tour for teachers of geography. The tours introduce geographical educators to key aspects of the contemporary geography of the destination country. Past tours have included visits to Romania, Costa Rica, Azores, Borneo, China, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mexico, Poland, South Africa, Singapore and Malaysia.

The latest Study Tour to Romania took place in July 2026. We will be updating this page with details for the next upcoming tour when the information is available.
Following a successful tour to the Azores in 2024, Flooglebinder in association with the GA’s International Special Interest Group is really excited to announce that the next study trip will be to Costa Rica in 2025.
We felt that it would be better to plan further ahead and give you the opportunity to explore both short and long-haul destinations, giving you the chance to choose, save and plan accordingly.

Romania 2026
In July 2026, take part in a rail-based (optional) CPD journey that combines Europe’s great cities with the wild beauty of the Carpathian Mountains.
With the option of travelling by train, you’ll move from London to Vienna and Brașov before spending time at a remote wilderness camp, then return home via Munich. The itinerary balances urban exploration and outdoor immersion: investigate sustainable transport, heritage, and modern city planning in Vienna, Brașov, and Munich, while also developing practical skills in wildlife observation, forest ecology, and fieldwork techniques in the mountains.
Designed for teachers of any subject who value sustainable travel, the programme includes collaborative workshops and peer-led discussions to share best practice and classroom ideas. You’ll come away with new professional connections, fresh resources, and a first-hand understanding of how both cities and wild spaces can shape learning.

Romania 2026

Costa Rica 2025
The 2025 Costa Rica Study Tour was to the breathtaking Osa Peninsula – home to over 50% of Costa Rica’s biodiversity – and the Monteverde Cloud Forest. There was a trip to terrestrial and marine conservation; sustainability projects aimed at tackling climate change; and a range of ecosystems from the rainforest to the ocean.
The group learnt about coastal and terrestrial systems on this unique peninsula and explored one of the planet’s beautiful biodiversity hotspots, visiting sea turtle hatcheries, coffee, sugar and banana plantations, and the Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve.

Azores Study Tour 2024
The 2024 Azores Study Tour in July had a focus on hydrology, species conservancy and geothermal energy. The tour offered hiking, kayaking and cycling around Sete Cidades, expanding knowledge of the conservation of endemic flora and fauna and the volcanic activity. A boat safari to identify the native cetaceans and other marine species, biodiversity workshops, a visit to Planalto dos Graminhais – a site of Azores Bullfinch conservation success, and more.

Borneo Study Tour 2023
The 2023 Borneo Study Tour in July had a focus on conservation and sustainability in Borneo. The tour offered visits to jungles, beaches and river safaris with the possibility to see monkeys, bats, orangutans and proboscis monkeys.

Nicaragua Study Tour 2022
The 2021 Nicaragua Study Tour was rearranged for 2022 due to COVID-19. This trip provided the opportunity to visit several environmental and renewable projects, active volcanoes and the Biosphere Reserve BOSAWAS.

India Study Tour 2019
The study tour 2019 is a unique opportunity to explore the huge diversity of this fascinating and rapidly developing country. There will be multiple relevant learning opportunities for both human and physical geographers on this study tour which will take you to both to the north and south of the country.

Russia Study Tour 2015
The purpose of the St. Petersburg–Republic of Karelia–Murmansk joint British-Russian Geography Study Tour was to provide an opportunity to investigate at first hand the geography of the Northwest region of Russia, a territory of unique natural resources and specific cultural traditions, history and contemporary human and economic activities. In the photoset you will find images of landmarks encountered on the tour alongside links to further information about the sites. The PowerPoint gives a full itinerary of the tour and further images.

Cooler China Study Tour 2014
This tour took a path less frequented by visitors, passing Beijing, Harbin (Heilongjiang Province), Changchun (Jilin), Shenyang and Dalian (Liaoning) in the North East region of China. The itinerary addressed geographical themes of urban development and planning, water resource management, flood control, wetland conservation, population policy, tourism management, volcanic landscapes, agricultural change and transport geography.
