Many congratulations from the Geographical Association to all A level geography students who have received their results.
Studying geography helps us all better understand the world’s complexity by revealing its people, places and environments – how they were, how they are, and how they are changing. We also all need a good level of geographical understanding to help us respond positively to the key challenges that face us.
The GA is delighted for those who will be continuing to study geography at university and also pleased that all the other candidates will be ‘taking their geography’ with them into their other studies, vocational courses and training or the workplace.
A few headlines from the A level results analysis include:
- Overall the A level grade distribution for the UK is in line with 2025.
- The number of students taking A levels has increased by 2.4% with 349,917 students in 2026 compared to 341,577 in 2025.
- The number of geography A level entries continues to see a downward trend with numbers down by 0.6% from 2025 to 34,128. While the rate of decrease has slowed significantly (it was 5.4% last year), this is against a backdrop of a 2.7% increase in entries across all subjects.
- The gender split was 54% male candidates and 46% female candidates.
- The population of 18 year-olds has increased by 3.9%.
- Geography remains 12th in order of popularity of subjects overall, but its ranking in the top 10 A level subjects by decrease in entry has fallen from fifth in 2025 to tenth in 2026, decreasing by 0.6%.
