A level results analysis 2025

Many congratulations from the Geographical Association to all the A level geography students who recently received their results.

Studying geography helps us all better understand the world’s complexity by revealing its people, places and environments – how they were, how they are, and how they are changing. And we all need a good level of geographical understanding to help us respond positively to the key challenges that face us.

The GA sends it best wishes to all the young people getting their results today and we hope you will ‘take your geography with you’ – whether you are going on to study geography or another course at university or starting a job, apprenticeship or vocational course.

A few headlines from the A level results analysis include:

• The A level grade distribution for the UK is in line with 2024.
• The number of geography A level entries continues to see a downward trend with numbers down by 5.4% from 2024 – there were 34,336 entries this year compared with 36,314 in 2024. This is against a slight decrease of 0.5% of entries for all A level subjects.
• The gender split was 53% male candidates and 47% female candidates.
• Geography remains 12^th in order of popularity of subjects overall, but its ranking in the top 10 A level subjects by decrease in entry has fallen from third in 2024 to fifth in 2025.
• The number of humanities subjects featuring in this list remains notable.
