2024 has been an exciting year for the partnership between the Geographical Association and Oak National Academy, as we celebrate the creation of a free, fully resourced, and adaptable curriculum for teachers to use in their classrooms.
In July 2024, we proudly completed the full primary geography curriculum. This comprehensive package of over 230 lessons equips teachers with slide decks, quizzes, worksheets, and videos, providing the tools they need to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the world. Through thematic units spanning a wide array of topics and regional studies at various scales, the curriculum builds the geographical knowledge and skills pupils need to make sense of the world around them.
Over 5000 teachers have already made over 24,000 downloads of these resources and we have received great feedback from teachers enjoying units such as ‘North and South America: how diverse are their places and landscapes?’ and ‘Local area: where do we go to school?’. Building on this success, since the spring of 2024 we have also been working together on our KS3 geography curriculum, while Oak works in partnership with Geography South West on a KS4 curriculum. Guided by feedback from teachers, educationalists, and industry experts, we have sequenced an exciting programme designed to deepen pupils’ geographical knowledge and help connect their learning across topics.
Throughout each unit, pupils will develop their geographical skills, including fieldwork techniques and using GIS to visualise, interpret, and analyse geospatial data. Since October, we’ve been in production mode, collaborating with a range of fantastic authors to develop lesson content scheduled for release between January and August 2025.
Eventually the secondary geography curriculum will have 246 fully resourced KS3 lessons sitting alongside 240 KS4 lessons created in partnership with Geography South West. The full secondary geography curriculum plan can be found here.
We encourage teachers to use these resources in ways that best suit their unique contexts, enabling them to deliver engaging and impactful lessons tailored to their pupils’ needs.
