During this academic year, the GA have worked with the David Ross Education Trust (DRET), the British Society for Soil Science (BSSS) and the Centre for Soil, Agrifood and Biosciences at Cranfield University on our Royal Society supported project, ‘Investigating Soil Infiltration’. You can read about the project here Investigating Soil Infiltration project – Geographical Association.

Image of pupils' work from the Soil Infiltration Project 2026The project has engaged over 750 pupils from year 3 to year 13 in seven Northamptonshire Schools through geography curriculum activities and enrichment groups. On Wednesday 8 July, a celebration event was held at Cranfield University where a group of year 3 pupil’s from Kings Heath Primary Academy were able to share their learning from the project. They had a tour of the soil science labs, reflected on what they had learnt from the project and heard from other schools about their projects.

Becky Kitchen, Head of Professional Development at the GA, said:

‘The celebration event was the culmination of what has clearly been a impactful project. It has emphasised the importance of soils within the geography curriculum, given schools opportunities to carry out high-quality fieldwork within their grounds and led to the production of excellent teaching resources. We’re working over the summer to turn these into a pack of resources so that other teachers can carry out similar activities with their pupils.’
