Next year's theme: Geography for everyone

As a subject that takes on the world, the ambition and scope of geography is vast. The breadth of the discipline is extensive, encompassing a diverse range of specialisms and drawing upon knowledge from many different fields. This diversity provides us with many different ways of thinking about and making sense of the world. It also sees geographers collaborating with a wide range of people and organisations across the world. However, geography is not static: it is a dynamic and ever-changing subject, shaped by research, practice and scholarly debate. Exploring the varied and evolving nature of geography is an essential aspect of geographical education.

The geography education community reflects the rich diversity of our subject. The community is home to a multiplicity of interests, passions and viewpoints, all of which are shaped by our own personal and professional journeys. We all see and experience the world differently and, as such, geography means something different to each of us. These unique personal geographies are also held by those that we teach. Taking time to share and understand these different perspectives supports teaching and learning, and ensures that a range of voices are heard.

The Geographical Association and its Annual Conference provides a forum to share and explore the rich nature of our discipline and hear from the many people that shape it. A geography for everyone is a theme that enables each and every person within the GA community to explore their diverse passions for the subject, share expertise, discuss diverging ideas and promote understanding and inclusion. As well as providing the opportunity to celebrate diversity, such discussions can also help the evolution of new and powerful insights into our discipline and practice.

Contributions could explore:

  • Specialist geographical knowledge and interests, with thoughts about how these can shape and update early years, school and university geography.
  • The contribution that geography can make to young people’s lives.
  • Children’s geographies.
  • Geography educators’ geographies (geographies shaped by lived experiences, personal interest and specialist knowledge).
  • Geographies of inclusion (and exclusion).
  • How can we make geography representative and accessible to all?

The theme can be interpreted in many different ways. It offers an opportunity to think broadly and creatively. It also makes deliberate connections to the recent themes of collaboration and everyday geographies.
