GEO (Geography Education Online) is an innovative website created by the GA during the summer of 2020, for students studying for GCSE geography, A level geography or equivalent qualifications. GEO was designed to offer young geographers a new and engaging way to extend their geographical thinking and support examination success in 2021 and beyond.
The GEO website provides access to live online sessions with fieldwork tutors, live academic lectures and interactive subject content, free of charge.
Project activities and achievements
The project phase of GEO, during which it was grant funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), ran from June 2020 to the end of March 2021. During this phase, the GEO website was designed and launched, to provide a platform for a number of innovative features:
Tutorials were broadcast live, to provide hands-on advice and guidance, and support students with their independent investigations and developing key geographical skills. Delivered in partnership with the Field Studies Council, there were ten tutorial sessions for A level and four for GCSE during GEO’s funded phase.
Lectures from speakers at the forefront of geographical research were also offered as live events. In total, 23 lectures provided inspiration and the opportunity for students to delve into key topics relating to geography GCSE and A level
The subject content on GEO includes website investigations, research summaries and knowledge quizzes. GEO content is divided into three sections: Human environment, Physical environment, and Geographical skills and enquiry. During its funded phase, a total of 85 learning resources were published, and the GEO website attracted over 100,000 page views from teachers and students.
