The main aim here is to show how the geography key stage 3 programme of study can be transformed. This is done through the use of eight global dimension concepts (developed by the DCSF) which help to encourage ‘thinking geographically’: Citizenship, Diversity, Interdependence, Social Justice, Sustainable Development, Conflict Resolution, Values and Perceptions and Human Rights.
- Citizenship
- Interdependence
- Social justice
- Sustainable development
- Conflict resolution
- Values and perceptions
- Diversity
- Human rights
Activities
The ideas for classroom practice outlined on the following pages can be adapted as required. Some of the activities can be accomplished within a single lesson, while others require longer. Full versions of each of the learning activities are shown in the booklet, while these webpages contain further resources and examples of classroom practice.
- Developing Talk
- Developing Maps
- Developing Sustainable Futures
- Developing Empathy and Understanding
- Developing Interpretations
- Developing Partnerships
Venn Diagrams
The basic Venn diagram demonstrates how planning can be done. Venn diagrams have been produced for five of the six themes – these are accessible via the appropriate pages.
A teaching and learning sequence
Most of the learning activities utilise an approach developed by the GA which can be described as ‘education for conversation’. It involves:
- An initial stimulus
- Mediation of geographical understanding
- Making sense of the matter
- Refining thinking
- Reflection
Further information is available in this teaching and learning sequence.
