A Village Comparison The Geography

Introduction

The unit of work selected was A Village Comparison. During the unit the children could compare their own place – a new, modern, urban village – to Brewood, an old, traditional, rural village approximately seven miles away.

The main focus was a full day’s fieldwork visit to Brewood:

Morning – Complete village comparison questions and activities relating to shops, houses, church, street furniture. Sketching and listing similarities and differences between Perton and Brewood.

Afternoon – Complete a geographical walk, stopping at six places with questions and activities using maps, photographs and compasses.

The Aims

  • To compare the similarities and differences between two villages
  • To complete a day’s fieldwork using maps, photographs and compasses
  • To produce a persuasive poster advertising Perton or Brewood as a place to live for a family moving into the area
  • To produce a PowerPoint with Action Buttons on a map of Brewood comparing the geographical features of Brewood to Perton
