Saudi Arabia The Geography

The unit of work on place

In the past, when studying place, the school has largely based the themes on published schemes/units of work.

Saudi Arabia had not been studied as a theme in school before, but the reason it was chosen was that North Reddish Juniors has a longstanding link (approx. 12 years) with Al Anjal Private Boys’ School in Jeddah. This link was, in the main, facilitated by the previous headteacher who retired at the beginning of the school year. The headteacher had visited Al Anjal and children from Al Anjal School have visited North Reddish Juniors.

I was conscious that someone needed to take over leading the link in order for it to continue and this seemed the ideal opportunity.

A copy of the school’s curriculum plan at the time is available below, however this has now completely changed to a creative curriculum approach.

The theme on Saudi Arabia was extremely cross-curricular and included literacy, art, drama, DT and science. The aim of the unit was to develop the children’s idea of place through the people who live there.
