Key Stage 3, Year 8

Focus

Opinions about changes in the Padiham area of Burnley.

Summary

The students were engaged in considering the social, environmental, political and economic systems that underpin change in an area. The students participated in debates and discussions about places, focussing on the Neighbourhood Action Plan and the town of Paiham. They developed their capacity to justify their ideas. One visible outcome of this was the production of a poster or leaflet summarising their ideas. They had to explain their preferred option for the future of Padiham.

Adapting this scheme for you own school

This scheme highlights a small scale local area and emphasises students’ current and potential role in the development of the community. There are some great ideas for using the OS Free Maps for Schools, these ideas could be adapted to your own place, or alternatively Padiham could used as a place study – here the powerpoint will be useful.
