There have been mixed results for this year’s (English) GCSE and A level geography cohort, according to early entry data:
Geography GCSE entries rose by 1.5% to 292,000; this was set against a decline in overall GCSE entries by 0.6%, and the decrease of the year 11 cohort by 1.6%. Entries for GCSE geography have consecutively increased since 2011, when there were 180,000 entries. Geography is the sixth most studied GCSE.
However, geography A level entries fell by 6.35% to 31,000; this was set against a decline of 0.4% in overall A level entries, despite an increase of 3.8% in the population size of 18 year olds. Geography is the 11th most studied A level.
