GA response to GCSE Computer Science consultation

Computer science consultation

The GA has responded to the consultation on the proposed subject content for the GCSE in computer science.

We have welcomed the proposal that children and young people studying computer science should ‘understand the importance of digital technologies to individuals and wider society’. We have suggested that this be expanded to include reference to technology’s impact on the environment.

The GA has highlighted the need for the use of ‘real world data’ and that the awarding organisations be encouraged to exemplify this through the inclusion of the use of geo-located data in their resulting specifications.

We have referenced how GIS is a requirement of the geography National Curriculum, at GCSE and A level and how the work of ESRI, the Ordinance Survey, GA and others have helped ensure thousands of schools have access to, and use, GIS in the geography classroom.
