The GA is running a month long open consultation to invite our members and consult more widely with other geographers to give everyone the opportunity to contribute to the development of our 2025 – 30 strategic plan. The following outline has been agreed by the GA’s Board of Trustees and we welcome your views on how we might take this forward through our future work.
2025-30 strategy vision and purpose
- Our vision: Geography is for everyone. It enhances our lives, learning and livelihoods. We need a geographically literate society to respond positively to the challenges that face us.
- Our purpose: We support teachers to improve the quality of their geography lessons and to help more young people enjoy the benefits of studying geography. We are a voice for geography, advocating for the importance of the subject in education and to society.

We have identified three key areas for our work
- Geography: Securing geography’s place in education and society
- Teachers: Developing better trained and supported teachers
- Next generation of geographers: Encouraging more young people, from all backgrounds, to study geography
As an organisation we will
- champion geography’s role in revealing the world’s people, places and environments
- promote geography’s contribution to climate change education, sustainability and green skills, and the value of fieldwork and geospatial skills
- develop the GA’s work with members, and partners, to increase our collective impact
- communicate effectively, use an engaging tone of voice and refresh our corporate identity
- share our values, achievements and challenges
- draw on digital resources and AI, in a cost-effective way, to extend our reach
- ensure financial and environmental sustainability of the GA and apply our resources to achieve greatest change
- promote good practice in our governance, operations, partnerships and work with members
- further address equality, diversity and inclusion in our work and with the subject community.
