Geography Editorial Collective member vacancy (physical geography specialism)

Geography 2023 covers

Geography is the Geographical Association’s flagship journal and highlights the thriving and dynamic nature of the discipline. It aims to bridge the gap between higher education institutions, and schools, colleges and academies by profiling current research in geography and geographical education. It seeks to communicate the findings of geographical research in a concise and accessible way.

The content of the journal is overseen by an Editorial Collective of six people, with the support of an Editorial Advisory Panel and production staff at the GA and Taylor & Francis who publish the journal on behalf of the GA.

The Editorial Collective is seeking to appoint a physical geographer to join the team in 2024.

The main tasks of this role are as follows:

  • Commissioning physical geography articles on themes relevant to the readership.
  • Identifying reviewers and managing the review process for commissioned and independently-submitted articles through an online system. There is training and advice available in using this system if needed.
  • Liaising with the GA production team where needed.
  • Writing editorials introducing an issue of the journal. This task rotates around the Collective, with each member usually writing an editorial on a two-year cycle.
  • Attending Editorial Collective meetings. These are held three times a year, with most meetings held online.
  • Promoting the journal to potential contributors and readers.

The person specification for this role is as follows:

  • Knowledge of contemporary debates within physical geography through active research and/or teaching.
  • Commitment to the dissemination of geographical research to student and teacher audiences.
  • Ability to write clearly for a non-specialist audience.
  • Experience of journal article reviewing.
  • Ability to work well in a team.

This is not a salaried position, but members of the Editorial Collective do receive an annual fee from the GA and travel expenses for meetings are covered. Please note that to undertake this role you must be, or become, a member of the Geographical Association.

The GA is actively committed to equal opportunities and the promotion of diversity and inclusion, and is seeking to enhance the diversity of our journal editorial boards. Therefore, while we welcome all applications from interested and suitably experienced people, we would particularly welcome applicants from UK minority backgrounds.

To apply, please send a CV and a covering letter, detailing your relevant experience and how you would contribute to the Editorial Collective.

Further information about the activities and responsibilities of the editors can be obtained from Katie Willis.

Closing date for applications is Friday 19 April 2024. Applications should be sent to Dorcas Brown, Senior Production Editor, Geographical Association (dbrown@geography.org.uk).
