Leave a legacy

Leaving a charitable gift to the GA in your will is a wonderful way to pass on your love of geography to future generations, by ensuring that the subject you have enjoyed will enrich the lives of young people in years to come. Leaving a gift in your will to the GA (registered charity no. 1135148) could also reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax payable on your estate.

Inspiring young geographers

The GA runs a number of schemes to inspire young people. A gift in your will would help us continue and expand this work. Our Future Geographers programme brings students aged 14-18 to Annual Conference, to follow a unique programme of lectures and activities. The GA’s WorldWise programme of face-to-face and online competitions helps students acquire world knowledge or attend a free weekend of fieldwork and group activities. Or you could help the GA provide advice to students on progression to careers with geography or assist a local GA branch to provide geography lectures for school students.

Developing geography teachers

We want future generations to engage with contemporary challenges and anticipate those to come. Which is why we need this generation of geography teachers to be skilled and confident. The GA supports teachers at every stage of their career, including during initial teacher training. We promote innovative and high-quality geography teaching through our GA Initiatives Fund and support teachers to provide high quality geography education for all.

The impact of leaving a legacy: the Sheila Jones fund

Sheila Jones was an inspirational geography teacher who had a lifetime of involvement with the Geographical Association. When Sheila sadly passed away in 2021, her estate left the Geographical Association a legacy of £10,000.

Given Sheila’s great advocacy for networking, this donation was divided into 100 packages of £100 each which were used to support, rejuvenate and develop networking through the GA.

How to leave a gift

Unrestricted gifts to the GA allow us the most flexibility, and a legacy gift of this kind would be carefully used wherever it is most needed. Alternatively, if you would like to leave a legacy to support an area of our work which is particularly close to your heart, we would be delighted to receive your gift on that basis.
