Back in school – follow up day

The follow up day, which was held back at Bottesford, was organised by the BGUCL students. It consisted of a carousel of four activities:

Activity 1: Using ICT

The children compared Bottesford with Skegness. They then used Microsoft Publisher to produce leaflets which were aimed at encouraging tourists to these destinations. The children were prompted to include information on population, transport, accommodation and services with each settlement.

Activity 2: Using maps

Using maps, globes and compass points, the children looked at where Bottesford is within the UK and the wider world.

Outside in the playground the pupils were reminded of compass directions using the painted compass. They were then given the directions of places in relation to Bottesford.

Back in the classroom pupils had to locate places on a map of the British Isles using an atlas and marking them with a signpost and plasticine. Using a world map pupils had to plan a route to Australia locating countries that they would pass through with the name and flag of the countries.

Activity 3: Using role play

The pupils were presented with the scenario of a coastal settlement at risk of coastal erosion and were given the role of stakeholders including farmers, a head teacher, a car park owner, a power station manager and a leisure centre manager. Some were town councillors.

Each stakeholder had to make their case to the town council for funding which was then used to buy sea defences and place them in the sandpit. A simulated storm then showed if the sea defences worked.

Activity 4: Using discussion

This activity started by using a game of ‘taboo’ to remind the children of the key words and vocabulary they would need in the debate later on in the session.

The pupils were divided into two groups to complete worksheets on the effectiveness of sea walls and groynes. In summary they had to come up with two advantages and two disadvantages of each method.

The pupils had to debate which method of coastal defences Skegness council should use. They used a ‘talking stick’ during the debate to make sure that when one person was holding the stick no one else could talk.
