Investigating Coasts The Geography

About the unit of work

Our overarching topic title is Inside Out. During this topic the children look at themselves and their local locality before learning about the wider world.

The geography unit of study is Contrasting Localities which includes an investigation into the coast at Skegness. I strongly believe that geography is a ‘doing’ subject and the best way to learn about coasts is to allow children to experience and understand them for themselves. Skegness is located 66 miles from Bottesford and is its nearest seaside resort.

The unit was also used to develop children’s concern for the environment by highlighting an environmental issue and enhancing their sense of responsibility for the world.

Working with Bishop Grosseteste University College

The first field visit to Skegness was in 2007 and was supported by parent helpers. However since then, the school has worked with second year BA Honours Geography students from Bishop Grosseteste University College, Lincoln (BGUCL).

During the last three years our link with the university has grown stronger and both parties benefit greatly from this collaborative work. The students accompany the pupils on the field visit and organise follow up activities back in school.
