Geographical concepts

Concepts provide a framework or ‘grammar’ for geography, while the ‘vocabulary’ is seen as the knowledge content. Concepts are important to help students to develop and organise their understanding of geographical processes and ideas.

Key concepts are central to students’ geographical education. The GA has identified the key concepts of place, space, earth systems and environment as a base for their curriculum framework.

The DfE Frameworks for ITE and ECTs recognise the importance of teaching core concepts, as well as identifying students’ misconceptions.
