The study of place and places are central to geography. The concept of ‘place’ can be interpreted in several ways, from a spatial location to a human experience. In the National Curriculum a distinction is made between locational knowledge and place knowledge.

Geography puts the understanding of social and physical processes within the context of place. Geographers recognise that, across the world, there are great differences between places in cultures, political systems, economies, landscapes and environments, and they explore these.
