Students’ learning in geography

“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”

Anonymous but often attributed to Benjamin Franklin

All geography teachers must understand how students learn. You need to explore the main learning theories that explain what influences students’ thinking and understanding. Educational theories evolve and develop and you will continually need to keep up to date.

Currently ideas from cognitive science are influential and feature strongly in the DfE requirements. You can find out about different theories about learning by reading educational texts, discussing with geography teachers and observing students as they are learning.
