Introductory techniques
Introduce the concept of planetary health to students using the planetary healthcheck website. This highlights the importance of eight planetary boundaries and how each indicator is interlinked with others to determine the overall health of planet Earth. For example, while climate is one of the indicators, it is not the only one and how it links to other indicators such as pollution, ocean pH and biosphere are just as interesting and important.

Ask pupils how they could measure the ‘health’ of their local area? What indicators would they choose to measure? How interconnected are they? How would they measure them?
Climate change and sustainability
Students may want to carry out the investigation that they have started to consider above and work it up into a fully planned investigation. Alternatively, they may want to use some of the tools on the Healthy Streets website to investigate the health of their local area. The tools provide an evidence-based approach to assess the fairness, sustainability and attractiveness of urban spaces.
