Learning about the uses, movement, states of, location and value of water provides pupils with the foundational knowledge to be able to develop a better understanding of the complexities of their world…but most of all at EYFS, water is fun!
Water can be the focus of its own unit of work and a range of questions can be explored across different units:

At EYFS there is a range of different activities that can be done outside to investigate some of these questions.
Waterplay area
Use containers, buckets, basins, guttering, hoses and funnels to investigate how water moves and flows from place to place, perhaps carrying things that float. Have a look at this blog to give you some ideas.

Pupils can also engage in small world play to make treasure islands, desert islands and ship wrecks.
Mark making
Water is a self-erasing ‘ink’ and is the perfect medium for trial and improvement as pupils make patterns and form letters and numbers.

Role play
We all use water every day to cook, clean and drink but many people, from farmers and firefighters to captains and car washers, rely on it to do their jobs…

In the grounds
Just add water: watch seeds germinate and grow into healthy tomatoes or sunflowers.

Picture books
Water is the main or at least the supporting character in many books enabling pupils to build an understanding of how it permeates into all aspects of life on Earth.
