These two lessons, created by the GA in partnership with the Environment Agency, provide an opportunity for pupils in upper key stage 2 to develop an understanding of how different ground materials impact infiltration rates, contributing to potential flood events.

Pupils are supported to think and work geographically through the collection, recording and analysis of data on the permeability of ground materials around the school site. They are asked to use their findings to advise planners of new schools about how to mitigate against the possibility of flooding. In particular, they will investigate how the use of natural ground materials can increase the permeability of a school’s grounds, which can help reduce flooding.

The resources comprise:

• a PowerPoint to display to the class, including information, activities and video links for the two lessons
• two printable activity sheets
• teacher notes outlining the lesson plans and giving further guidance on the geographical concepts covered.
