These three lessons, created by the Geographical Association in partnership with the Environment Agency, provide an opportunity for pupils in key stage 3 to understand:

1. The impact of flooding, particularly that from Storm Desmond, on the settlement of Kendal, Cumbria.
2. What natural flood management is.
3. How natural flood management and hard engineering are being used to protect Kendal.

The resources draw on first-hand experiences of flooding in Kendal as documented in the Kendal Flood Investigation Report and look at the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme developed by the Environment Agency and partners, which is innovative in its combination of natural flood management and hard engineering techniques.

Pupils use a range of maps, graphics, videos and accompanying information to explore these themes and draw conclusions about the effectiveness of natural flood management.
