With changes to the geography curriculum on the horizon, teachers may be wondering what the proposed reforms could mean for their planning and classroom practice.
In a recent article for Teachwire, our Chief Executive Steve Brace examines the Department for Education’s draft geography curriculum and highlights the key developments primary teachers should be aware of. These include a stronger emphasis on climate change and sustainability, greater attention to disciplinary knowledge, and ensuring that case studies accurately reflect the diversity of places and people in today’s world.
Encouragingly, Steve suggests that schools will not need to start from scratch. Instead, the changes are likely to build on existing good practice, allowing teachers to review and adapt their current geography provision over time.
As the curriculum evolves, the Geographical Association remains committed to supporting primary teachers with high-quality resources, expert guidance, professional development opportunities and practical classroom support.
