The GA’s Teacher Education Phase Committee (TEPC) is a vibrant and active GA volunteer group that seeks to support GA members contributing to the wider Geography Teacher Education community by reviewing the educational landscape as it affects teacher education. Through research, horizon scanning and engaging with teacher educators from across the wider community, TEPC seeks to:
- Create and disseminate high quality ITE resources which are available via the GA ITE webpages. Here you will find a wealth of support and guidance for new teachers of geography, specifically for trainee and early career teachers, teacher educators, including school-based mentors across both the primary and secondary phases.
- Commission, participate in and share research. TEPC members were instrumental in supporting the GA with its publication of ‘The professional needs and views of teachers of geography’ research report (2022). Contributions are regularly made to the GA blog ‘Recruitment in geography education: a crisis landscape?’ (2023) and Annual Conference sessions ‘Where are the opportunities for disciplinary thinking and geographical dialogue in the Early Career Framework?’ (2023).
- Respond to calls for evidence. TEPC engage with the wider ITE community through the submission of evidence in response to DfE reviews, national consultations and calls for evidence (2016, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2024).
TEPC are seeking to recruit new members and would welcome anyone who would like to join us, especially practising teachers who mentor Initial Teacher Education trainees and / or Early Career Teachers in primary and secondary schools. We meet each term on a Saturday, twice online and once in person throughout the year. We have space for full or corresponding members.
