Tes analysis shows geography affected by retention payments

Tes analysis - retention payments

A Tes analysis shows extra payments are failing to reach some schools in areas where a significant amount of lessons are being taught by non-specialists. Geography is one of the subjects where teachers are not eligible for retention payments.

The subject has seen large growth in GCSE entries in the last decade. ‘There’s huge pressure on GCSE because of this,’ said Steve Brace, chief executive of the Geographical Association. ‘For some schools, it’s entirely non-specialist teaching at key stage 3 in geography, and we know there’s a greater proportion of non-specialists teaching geography in more deprived schools.’

To support non-specialists who are training to become geography teachers the GA has launched an eight-week online course designed for geography trainees who haven’t previously studied a geography (or a similar) degree. Find out more about the Subject Knowledge Scholar Programme, the deadline for this year’s cohort is 31 March 2025.
