The GA was delighted to contribute to this report and work with other subject colleagues from The Council for Subject Associations (CfSA), the Natural History Museum and the UCL Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability Education to explore teaching about climate change and sustainability.
The Role of Subjects and Subject Associations in Climate Change and Sustainability Education in England report highlights the important roles of citizenship, geography and science in teaching about climate change and sustainability and the contributions that can be made by subjects across the curriculum. It notes the current review of the curriculum and calls for the revised curriculum to include reference to how the curriculum supports ‘working towards a more sustainable future’.
In the GA’s separate Curriculum and Assessment Review response we highlighted geography’s distinctive approach is central to developing young peoples’ green skills, their understanding of environmental sustainability and how climate change will transform our economy, society and environment – locally and globally. This work starts in the Early Years and Foundation Stage, is developed further in the primary geography classroom, continues through the secondary key stages and the subject’s examinations at GCSE and A level.
